Martlets Finally Get Loomis Monkey Off Their Back

After 7 years, 12 losses, and a tie, Coach Pope finally had a Westminster win against Loomis. In the first period, both teams started slowly. The Black and Gold could not get our forecheck in gear, and Loomis had a few good opportunities. Fortunately, Kayla Lessard ‘08 stood tall in net and preserved the 0-0 tie. In the second, it seemed the Martlets had not shaken the nervousness and Loomis started gaining momentum. One of the Loomis guns then went end-to-end and banged in her own rebound for a 1-0 lead. Two minutes later they had another great opportunity on the
powerplay, but Lessard squeezed and the period ended 1-0 Loomis. In the third, Westminster finally got rolling. The Martlets started winning races to the puck and had a number of great chances. Nicole Fox ‘10 fired one that hit both cross bar and side post but was not called a goal. Then Tori Pizzuto ‘10 rung one off the crossbar. It seemed the Martlets were doomed again. Then Sara Reid ‘08 on a pass from Bethany Dymarczyk ‘08, dangled the Loomis defenseman and went top corner to tie the game and energize the team. In the overtime, once again Lessard came up huge in the net. With less than a minute to play Emily Walsh '09 took a Sara Ugalde '10 pass and streaked down the right wing. as she passed the defenseman she fired a shot that either bounced right in or came back and bounced off of her as she ended up in the net. As the ref pointed to the puck in the net, the Black and Gold bench went wild, 2-1 Westminster!! Tomorrow, Greenwich at home.
