Second Boys' Hockey Falls To In-Town Rival

Second Boys' Hockey opened the 2007-2008 campaign against Simsbury High School's varsity squad. The two teams had their annual tight battle, but Simsbury came out on the winning end by the score of 3-0. The first period saw plenty of fast-paced, up and down action with Simsbury capitalizing on a Westminster own-end turnover to go up 1-0 with a minute remaining in the period. After a scoreless second period, Simsbury took advantage of a Westminster defensive breakdown and netted their second goal midway through the third frame. While the Martlets started to press to mount some needed offense, Simsbury scored a third goal in the closing minutes of the game. Simsbury played a very strong game utilizing good defensive structure and solid goaltending to deny Westminster quality scoring chances. With only two practices prior to this contest, the Martlets demonstrated improvement as this game progressed. Clearly the team will be in better shape in all regards with additional practice time this week as they prepare to take on Choate in Wallingford on Wednesday. Both Caron Christman '08 and Brian Smith '08 had a strong game for the Black and Gold on defense, and Matt Betten '10 made some nice saves playing in his first Westminster game in goal.
