First Girls Soccer faced a stong Williston squad

Hoping to reach the .500 mark for their season record, Westminster's First Girls' Soccer team journeyed to Williston on Saturday only to come away with a 0-0 tie. Although they were playing on a turf surface for the first time this season, the Lady Martlets looked like they had played on the rug all their lives at the start of the match. Despite the impressive combination play of Captain Jessi Waters '07, Sara Reid '08, Ali Evans '07, and Jacki Savage '09, Westminster could not finish the attacks with a goal. The last twenty minutes of the first half saw both teams threatening but never succeeding. In the second half, Williston pushed their outside fullbacks into the attack, causing more challenges for the visitors. Twice Williston produced a ball within the six-yard box, but could not convert. With six minutes left in the contest, Heidi Bitter '07 made a game saving clear of a loose ball in front of the Westminster net. The Martlets missed a game-winning opportunity with less than two minutes left in the game, when Ali Evans fired a bullet from 25-yards out that skimmed the Williston crossbar. The Westminster fullback line played particularly well this day with Liz Cole '09 acknowledged as Westminster's player of the game by both Coach Jackson and Coach Pilgrim from Williston. Westminster will host Suffield on Wednesday.
