Matthew Emmel Named Semifinalist in 2007 National Merit Scholarship Program

DS
Matthew Emmel, a Sixth Former at Westminster School, has been named a Semifinalist in the 52nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Semifinalists represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors and include the highest scoring entrants in each state.

He will be among 16,000 Semifinalists in the program competing for some 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards that will be offered next spring.

Matthew is the son of Dr. and Mrs. David K. Emmel of Avon, CT.

“The Westminster community is extremely proud of Matthew’s selection as a Semifinalist for the prestigious National Merit Awards,” said Westminster School Headmaster Graham Cole.  “We celebrate the distinction he brings to himself and to our school, and wish him well as continues in the competition for a Merit Scholarship award.”

Matthew, a summus student, has taken a rigorous course schedule at Westminster including six advanced placement (AP) classes prior to his Sixth Form year and five AP classes this year. “He is very hard working and has excelled in the most challenging schedule you can take at Westminster,” said Director of Studies Gregory Marco.

An active member of the Westminster community, Matthew is editor of the school newspaper; serves on the board of Serving our Neighbors (SON), a community service organization; competes on the golf and squash teams; and participates in technical theater.

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must advance to the Finalist level of the competition by fulfilling several requirements.  About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half of the Finalists will be selected as Merit Scholarship winners, earning the Merit Scholar title.  Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Merit Scholarship winners of 2007 will be announced beginning in April and concluding in July.
