Westminster Loses to Berkshire

The Martlets played perhaps their worst game of the year and lost a sloppily played contest to a scrappy Berkshire team, 17-16. Westminster (5-7) staked the home team to an 11-3 lead after three innings largely due to an astonishing 9 errors committed in the field (we made 11 on the day). The Martlets regrouped and held the Bears scoreless in the 4th and 5th innings, adding three runs of their own before exploding for 7 runs in the top of the 6th and gaining a 16-11 lead.

The heavens opened up in the home half of the 6th, and the Martlet pitchers struggled with their control as the game continued during a steady shower. Four different pitchers issued 8 walks and hit two batters over the final 1 2/3 innings, and the home team escaped with a victory by scoring 4 in the bottom of the 7th even though they only put 2 balls into play. Westminster wasted a fine outing by Will Katz '07, who threw 5 innings, yielding 15 ground balls and only one walk.

Alex Young '07 and Lane Bodian '06 had three hits each, Alex Lavoie '06 drove in three runs, and Ryan Shamshoum '07 homered and doubled for the Martlets, who totaled 16 hits and 8 bases on balls. We hope to shake this one off and rebound against Trinity-Pawling at home on Saturday in a matchup of Founders League opponents.
