A Gift for Olivia

Westminster students, faculty, and staff rolled up their sleeves on November 15 for the Fourth Annual Blood Drive sponsored by the American Red Cross. More than 86 donors and 30 volunteers contributed to this very special event dedicated to faculty child Olivia Tawney. Olivia, the daughter of English teacher Bryan Tawney and his wife Kim, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) four years ago. She underwent months of therapy, including many blood transfusions, and each year, the school community dedicates the annual blood drive in her honor. Fortunately, Olivia is currently in remission and an active and busy third grader.

Along with the donors, there were many volunteers who assisted with the successful drive by handling registration, holding donors’ hands, and providing many delicious hand-made refreshments for donors. Special thanks goes to Robin Collinson Newman ’87 and Kim Tawney, the coordinators of the event for the past four years. Their work, and the contributions of the many donors, volunteers, assistants, and donors made the day extraordinary.

The 64 units of blood donated this year means that as many as 192 people will receive the important life-giving products that blood donation provides. Blood products are used for surgery, trauma, chemotherapy, kidney dialysis, hemophilia, shock, and other life-threatening conditions
