Martlets Fall to Wild Boars

Heavy rain lulled the girls to sleep on the van ride to Choate where the match was played on their three indoor courts. With track, baseball, and crew teams all indoors in the same space,  there was a lot of movement and noise surrounding the courts. There were yellow, blue, and white lines on the floors, making the whole experience full of distractions. On one of the courts Coach Doucette had to make sure some passers by stayed off the court itself. Pippa Jervis ‘28 and birthday girl Lake Carter ‘28, who shares a birthday with Coach Doucette’s son Andrew, played exciting tennis with both teams having many putaways at net. After getting to 5-5, the Choate team won out the pro-set. Candice Hong ‘28 and Karen Li ‘28 nearly took their match, leading 7-6 and just needing one more elusive game. With #2 and #3 singles away, Georgia Ursano ‘28 moved up to #2 and Angelina Mertz’29 made her debut in the singles lineup. Ursano was nervous, but played many games to deuce. Mertz gave the match her usual grit and grace, being kind and never giving up. She had many deuce games as well and won another game as the match wore down. Co-captain Avery Gray ‘26 was able to block out all of the distractions and prevent the shutout. Gray has been stellar at the top of the ladder with only one loss all season. Grit and Grace award goes to Angelina Mertz.
