Martlets Sweep Pomfret

The wind returned today for our second home match, this time against Pomfret.  Luckily, the Martlets have learned to adapt, and took down the Griffins in a clean 7-0 sweep.  We started out with a very quick sweep of the doubles matches, with Jeff Niu ‘26 & Sam Herdeg ‘27 winning 8-1, Sonny Darnowski ‘28 & Rohan Satpathy ‘27 winning 8-0, and Ryden Maeda ‘29 & Caden Cramer ‘27 winning 8-1.  All doubles teams are really starting to gel, and exhibited both strong communication and effective net play.  In the singles matches, the Martlets had to adapt not only to the wind, but to opponents who played a slow and consistent game, sometimes succumbing to unforced errors in the hopes of ending the point.  That said, both practice and patience paid off, with a clean sweep of the singles, including a strong 8-2 win in an exhibition match from Alessio Suarez ‘28.  Will Jones ‘28, Jeff Niu ‘26, and Calvin Bixby ‘28 won 8-3, 8-4, and 8-6 at the top half of the ladder, and Sonny Darnowski ‘28, Issac Kwon ‘28, and Luke Champoux ‘28 closed out the rest of the ladder with 8-1, 8-5, and 8-1 wins.  Next match will be on the road at Hotchkiss.

The Grit & Grace Award for the match goes to Jeff Niu ‘26.  After helping out his teammates with some coaching around both serving and ground strokes technique at practice, Jeff played solid tennis at both singles and doubles today, keeping focused and getting the job done, just as he coached his teammates to do.
