Martlets Win on the Road

On Saturday afternoon at Canterbury, the Martlets skated to a hard-fought 2-1 road victory, using a strong first period to secure the win. The Martlets wasted little time getting on the board. Just five minutes into the opening frame, junior Mya Polastry ‘27 walked off the wall and fired a shot through heavy traffic in front. The puck slipped past the Canterbury netminder and into the back of the net, giving Westminster an early 1-0 advantage. Westminster continued to apply pressure throughout the period, controlling possession and creating chances in the offensive zone. With just three minutes remaining in the first, Ella Hammel ‘28 collected the puck along the wall and sent it toward the net. The shot deflected off traffic in front and found its way through, doubling the Martlets’ lead to 2-0. Excitement ensued celebrating Hammel’s first goal in the Black & Gold! The second period remained scoreless. Strong defensive play and timely saves kept Canterbury off the scoreboard, preserving the two-goal cushion heading into the final period. Canterbury struck quickly in the third, capitalizing early to cut the deficit to 2-1 and shift momentum. The goal put the Martlets on their heels as the home side pushed for the equalizer. Despite the pressure, Westminster stayed disciplined down the stretch, limiting quality chances and battling along the boards to run out the clock. When the final horn sounded, the Martlets emerged with a well-earned 2-1 victory. The Martlets look ahead to a big three game week where they will kick things off with a home game against Frederick Gunn on Monday.

Our Grit & Grace player of the game is junior captain Bella Zapata! Bella was acknowledged by her teammates today for her unwavering effort, energy, and leadership.
