Martlets Battle AOF in OT

On a bitterly cold winter night outside, the atmosphere inside Jackson Rink was anything but as Westminster and Avon Old Farms renewed their Founders League rivalry in front of a few thousand students, faculty, alumni, and townspeople. The energy was electric from puck drop, and the hockey delivered, with two evenly matched teams trading goals and momentum all night long.
Avon Old Farms struck first, but Westminster answered in the first period when Owen Burke ’26 (W) found the back of the net to even the score and ignite the home crowd. Avon responded to take a 2–1 lead, but the Martlets pushed back late in the second period as Timmy Donohue ’26 (W) scored to tie the game at 2–2, a pivotal goal that swung momentum heading into the third.
The intensity ramped up in the final frame as both teams pressed for the go-ahead goal. Avon again pulled in front, only to see Westminster respond once more. Donohue scored again with the goalie pulled in the final minutes of the third period to tie the game at 3 sending the Martlet student section into a frenzy. With regulation ending deadlocked, the game moved to overtime, where Avon Old Farms capitalized on a sudden-death opportunity to earn the 4-3 victory.
Despite the outcome, the night was a showcase of Founders League hockey at its finest — speed, physicality, and pride on both sides. Ryan Galaski was solid in net for the Martlets.
