Martlets Fall to Wick

The Martlets hosted Brunswick on Saturday afternoon for a 3:00 p.m. matinee, looking to bounce back from a tough overtime loss on Wednesday, while Brunswick aimed to build on momentum from a strong road win at Kent.
Brunswick struck first following a Martlets miscue that allowed a Brunswick forward to slip behind the defensive line and break in alone on goaltender Caden Weichselbaumer ’28. The shot found the back of the net just minutes into the game, giving Brunswick an early 1–0 lead. The Martlets responded well, sustaining pressure in the offensive zone, and quickly evened the score when Will Derbyshire ’26 banged home a rebound after a gritty net-front effort.
Both teams continued to press in the second period, creating quality chances at both ends. Brunswick capitalized on a 2-on-1 to regain the lead in a fast-paced period highlighted by strong end-to-end play.
Trailing by one with 18 minutes remaining, the Martlets continued to grind and were rewarded when Gus McGarvey ’26 beat a defender wide and tucked a shot past the Brunswick netminder to tie the game. With just under half the period remaining, the contest was firmly up for grabs.
Unfortunately for the Black and Gold, Brunswick scored the next two goals—one off a screened shot that Weichselbaumer never saw and another that deflected off a skate in the high slot and into the net. Brunswick added an empty-net goal to secure a 5–2 victory.
Shots were nearly even at 34–31. Despite the result, the Martlets were encouraged by their effort, while recognizing that scoring just two goals makes winning games difficult. Flood-Marr is up next.
