Martlets Fall to Bears in Back & Forth Game

In what has become the annual season opener, Third Boys Hockey welcomed the Berkshire Bears for an afternoon tilt at Jackson Rink. Despite not having had much time on the ice just yet, both teams were eager to drop the puck on the 2025-26 season. The first period was a bit of a defensive battle, with both teams exchanging chances and Berkshire jumping out to a 2-1 lead. Henry Norton ‘29 tallied the Martlets’ lone goal. The second period was totally different, as both teams traded goals throughout the entire frame. Winston Caracappa ‘28 tied the game just 26 seconds after puck drop. Berkshire regained the lead at the 4:48 mark, and a few minutes later, Mark Broderick ‘29 tied the game once again with an unassisted end-to-end rush. The Bears opened up a two-goal lead before Norton’s second goal of the game cut it to one at 11:47. Keeping the rollercoaster ride going, Berkshire scored once again with under a minute to play in the period. Forgive the typist for not including the secondary scoring; the pace of play left some stats unrecorded. The Bears extended their lead to 7-4 at 5:15 of the third period. Undeterred, Westminster dug in and scored two goals 16 seconds apart with just over seven minutes to play. Eli Heffer ‘29 recorded his first as a Martlet, and Will Gallagher ‘27 snapped off a low wrister from the point that found its way through traffic to the back of the net. Unfortunately, that’s where the scoring stopped for the afternoon. Despite pulling the goalie and getting one last look at the net in the waning seconds, the final score favored the Bears, 7-6. Martlets up and down the lineup battled hard this afternoon, and the team is already looking forward to their next test against always-talented Rumsey Hall on Wednesday, 12/10. See you at the Jack!
