Martlets Fall to Rumsey

The Martlets traveled deep into Litchfield County on a chilly and cloudy Wednesday afternoon to take on a talented and disciplined Rumsey Hall squad. Early in the game, Westminster, the larger and faster of the two teams, had trouble playing defense without being too physical, compiling a few yellow cards and giving Rumsey Hall lots of free kicks. Rumsey jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first half, but the Martlets regrouped at halftime, focusing on keeping their emotions under control and playing better team defense. Dylan Park ’29 brought Westminster within one early in the second half, but the Blue Dogs answered quickly, making the score 3-1. Dylan Park ’29 added his second goal of the day to bring the Martlets within one, but Rumsey answered quickly again, and the score remained at 4-2 until the final whistle. Westminster created lots of scoring chances in the game’s final minutes, playing their signature gritty soccer until the final whistle, but came up just short a few times. Jacob Flores ’29 had his best game of the season on defense, Lucas Steniger ’29 was excellent in net, filling in for the injured Kareum Skovron-Rasheed ’29, and Drew Doering ’29 earned the Grit and Grace Award by leading the team with his unrivaled effort and composed play. Westminster will get back to work after the Hill Holiday to prepare for the last two games of the season.
