Students Get an Early Start on Leadership Training

Before classes even started, student leaders focused on this year’s theme of “unity” by coming together for a weekend retreat and leadership training in late August. Led by Dean of Community and Culture Devonna Hall, Dean of Residential Life A-Men Rasheed, and Sixth Form Dean Matthew Thomsen, Fifth and Sixth Formers serving as Prefects, Resident Assistants, and Peer Leaders began their training on Saturday, August 30, at Winding Trails in nearby Farmington, Conn. The outdoor wooded location provided a dramatic setting for challenging high- and low-rope courses where students developed skills related to leadership, cooperation, responsibility, and communication.

On Sunday, student leaders took part in servant leadership training with Shanterra McBride, a life coach and founder of Marvelous University, who offered a presentation on the characteristics found in leaders who accomplish great things by putting people first. Student participants and faculty facilitators alike were grateful for the opportunity to come together at the earliest occasion to actively prepare for their leadership roles in this school year.
