Winter Sports Highlights 1.20.20

Basketball - First Boys'
Jan. 15: Basketball - First Boys’ 57 vs. Choate Rosemary Hall 58
The Martlets hosted a solid class A foe — Choate Rosemary Hall — on a late Wednesday evening. Both teams started off a little cold but then things began to get intense as the Wild Boars went on a run. Choate went up as much as nine in the first half but the gritty Martlets fought back. Captain Jack Devlin ‘20 came in late in the first half and gave the Martlets a spark on defense, which led to tying the game at halftime. In the second half, it was an old fashioned slug fest. Both exchanged physical play on both ends of the court. However, the Martlets came up short due to a missed shot with 0.4 of a second left on the clock in regulation. Captain Chris Robinson '20 led the charge with 18 points, 10 assists, six rebounds and three steals. Fifth Former Teddy Mangiarotti '21 also had 18 points and three steals. Sixth Former Rafa Charfole also had a solid double double with 12 points, 14 rebounds and two blocks. Big shoutout to Sixth Former Joe Walsh who has been a stud defense all year.

Jan. 17: Basketball - First Boys’ 70 vs. Canterbury School 80
The Martlets took on the No. 2 ranked Class B team Jan 17, in front of a packed gym. However, the Martlets were up for the challenge. The first half was up and down and the Martlets were down 35-40. Westminster came out in the second half with a ton of energy. The entire second half was controlled by bonus foul shots but both teams played hard until the end. Also, both teams sustained slight injuries but they battled through it. With two minutes left, the Martlets cut the deficit to 70-76 but Canterbury hit a few key free throws to ice the game. Chris Robinson '20 led all scorers with 28 points, eight assists, six rebounds and three steals. Teddy Mangiarotti '21 also had 16 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals on the night. Rafa Charfole '20 chipped in with 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Gabe Charleston '21 had a solid night with 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Joe Walsh '20 and Owen Larsen '20 both played stellar defense the entire game. Big shoutout to Larsen on his first official varsity bucket.

Jan. 18: Basketball - First Boys’ 62 vs. Marianapolis Preparatory School 69

Basketball - First Girls'
Jan. 15: Basketball - First Girls’ 15 vs. Choate Rosemary Hall 75
As the score obviously indicates, there's not a lot of good to report about Westminster’s trip to Wallingford. The team entered the game missing two key, injured starters against a superior opponent, so it was an uphill battle from the get-go. Co-captain Bethany Winters ’20 led the team in scoring. Sam de Kanter ’22 and Allison Kijanka ’20 — making her first career start — did good work on the boards, and Margaret Kennedy ’22 played the majority of the game and bounced back valiantly from a couple of big hits and played much better in the second half.

Jan. 13: Basketball - Second Boys’ 52 vs. Hillside School 58

Jan. 15: Basketball - Second Boys’ 27 vs. Choate Rosemary Hall 23
Baker Morton '22 sealed the victory for the Martlets with some timely, clutch free throw shooting in the game's final seconds. From the start, both Westminster and Choate played stifling defense, smothering each other’s ball handler, fighting through ball screens and ripping rebounds with authority. Westminster trailed for most of the first half but kept its focus, as well as the Wild Boars lead, small, culminating in a last second three-pointer by Cooper Kistler '22 to pull within three before the half. The chess match would continue after halftime. Choate's offense ate a lot of the clock, so Westminster had to make its own possessions count, which it did. After Choate committed a couple of turnovers and uncharacteristic fouls, the Martlets spied some daylight. Zach Burelle '20 tied the game with a free throw, Kistler sliced his way to the hoop for a layup and then Morton, after being fouled, made his free throws to stretch the Martlets final lead to four, where it would stand when the buzzer sounded. Ben Mihailovich '22 continued his rebounding prowess, grabbing eight boards to go with five points; Max Brownback '21 continued to show great leadership and poise as he chipped in four points; Riley Devine '23 and point guard Jack Darnowski '23 each chalked up a few all-important offensive rebounds; and Morton and Kistler finished with seven points apiece. Altogether, the first win of the season was a team effort; everyone saw minutes, and everyone played hard and smart.

Jan. 17: Basketball - Second Boys’ 73 vs. Canterbury School 79
Westminster trailed 29-51 at the half, mostly due to sluggish defense; however, after convening in the locker room, the Martlets soared back during the next 14 minutes. Canterbury went cold from outside the arc, Westminster boxed out, and on offense the Black and Gold played patient enough to see many open shots and lanes. The Martlets cut Canterbury's 22 point lead to just one with about two minutes left. After gaining possession, they needed to just cherish one more chance, wait for the best scoring opportunity and take it, but a turnover then a foul put Canterbury into the bonus, where it capitalized on its opportunities from the free throw line. Despite the loss, Westminster can be proud of its comeback, not to mention the last three games as a whole, where the team lost in overtime, won another nail-biter and now almost did the impossible. Baker Morton '22 led all scorers with 20 points. Jack Darnowski '23 scored a season-high 12 points, Ben Mihailovich '22 chipped in his usual 11 points with eight rebounds, Cooper Kistler ’22 added 11 points with five rebounds, and Roman Mitchell '20 and Tommy Cramer '23 contributed five points apiece. Boniface Fatohou '23 added four points and much needed spark off the bench.

Jan. 18: Basketball - Second Boys’ 28 vs. Wilbraham & Monson Academy 53
With three games over the last four days, the Martlets have run out of gas. Saturday’s first half was lopsided in Wilbraham's favor as Westminster didn't have an answer on defense for the Titans' size and skill. Trailing 9-33 at the half, the Black and Gold played with more urgency in the second half, nearly matching Wilbraham in scoring. It wouldn't be enough, however, as the scoreboard at the end of regulation read 28-53. Zach Burelle '20 led the Martlets in scoring with seven points, including two three-pointers. In addition, Tommy Cramer '23 had a fine game at the point and Matt Greggains '23 played well all-around.

Basketball - Third Boys'
Jan. 15: Basketball - Third Boys’ 23 vs. Berkshire School 49
Third Boys’ Basketball played Berkshire’s Thirds team up in Sheffield. The team got off to a good start with a 3-pointer to open the first half, a sneak peek at things to come. With the Bears playing a tight defense, more than half of the Martlets points came off 3-pointers, including two from Chris Paolella ’23 and two from Mike Yang ’23. Trailing at the half, the team decided to begin the second half with a defensive formation it hadn’t practiced before, and used it for the remainder of the game. Lawrence Taylor ’23 brought the heat with this new formation and helped the team hold off the Berkshire offense in situations the Bears had taken advantage of during the first half. The game concluded as a 23-49 loss for Westminster.

Hockey - First Boys'
Jan. 15: Hockey - First Boys’ 5 vs. Taft School 1
Looking to build from the momentum generated against TP Jan. 11, the Martlets faced Taft at home Jan. 15. Home games are always a boost, and coming off a strong two days of practice, the Martlets came out firing. Attention to detail and determination were high in the early going, and Westminster swarmed Taft’s net, creating many high-quality opportunities early in the period. The Martlets outshot the Rhinos more than double in each period, and scoring opened early. Darion Benchich ‘20 and Brennan Horn ‘21 each netted a goal in the opening frame. Defensive structure was better than in previous games, and Westminster was able to keep Taft on its heels. Quinn Armstrong ‘20 netted a short-handed goal in the third, and Benchich scored his second on the power play. Ryan Pineault ‘20 would capitalize on a turnover and score to make the score 5-1. Taft was able to score on the power play, but Bennett Ostern ‘21 stopped all other shots from the Rhinos. The Martlets earned a good win.

Jan. 18: Hockey - First Boys’ 4 vs. Salisbury School 5
After two Elite Eight losses in as many seasons at Salisbury, Westminster hoped its trip Saturday would yield a better result. The last two weeks have been much stronger in practice and in games for the Martlets than they had been in late 2019. Scoring is coming more often, and from more players, and goaltending has been consistent. The Martlets came out flying in this game. Playing on the big ice at Salisbury is a challenge, but Westminster was able to capitalize on some strong effort plays from Jordy Nelson ‘21 off a nice feed from Sean Hurley ‘20 and then Peter Sanger ‘21 early in the game to take a 2-1 lead before the end of the first. The Martlets pursued loose pucks with tenacity, and kept the Knights on their heels by getting pucks behind their defense and making them retrieve deep in their zone. The second period was a different story, and Salisbury was able to knock home three second-chance opportunities and emerged from the second period up 4-2. Westminster played a great third and kept chipping away. Sanger scored his second with just two minutes to play to cut the lead to one. The Martlets called a timeout, and were ready to make a final push. Salisbury kept its tempo high, and found some puck luck with a fortuitous bounce over a Westminster defender’s stick in front of the open net, 5-3. The Martlets kept swinging until the final buzzer and scored off a nice shot from the point with just seconds left to cut the lead to one again. The final horn sounded and the game ended 5-4 Salisbury.

Hockey - First Girls'
Jan. 15: Hockey - First Girls' 3 vs. Choate Rosemary Hall 1
Westminster was on the road again this as they faced off against Founders League rival Choate. From the beginning, Westminster was on its heels a bit as the team tried to find its rhythm and set the tone. Goalie Mandy Busky '21 had to keep her team in it for a bit, until Taylor Adams '20 stole the puck and then slipped it past the Choate goalie for the 1-0 lead. The second period again started in Choate’s favor, but Westminster got it together for a good break-out. Jenny Guider '20 cycled the puck in the offensive zone, walking out from the half-wall. Seeing this, Amelia Molin '23 hustled to get to the front of the net just as Guider let a shot go. Molin was there to put away the rebound and give her team the 2-0 lead. In the third, Choate would not be denied. They drew penalties and increased the pressure until they got on the board with just seven minutes left. Westminster could feel the pressure and needed to lean on each other to weather the storm. Despite another close call on a penalty kill with just five minutes left, Westminster clung to the lead. The final minute was tense, but suddenly with just 10 seconds left, Adams broke up a play, sliding the puck to a breaking Guider in the slot. Guider was denied on her initial shot, but Megan Rittenhouse '20 finished the rebound. The team was challenged with this game by a tough Choate team, but it was good preparation for the difficult week that lies ahead.

Jan. 17: Hockey - First Girls’ 5 vs. Canterbury School 0
Westminster earned another win on the road as they faced off against Canterbury. The Martlets were put on their heels for almost the entire first period as Canterbury executed a perfect forecheck. Luckily, Westminster goalie Kayla Ireland '22 kept her team in the game as she turned away the consistent pressure. Finally, with just one minute left, Taylor Adams '20 seized the momentum as she stole the puck behind the Canterbury net during a penalty kill and wrapped around to slip it behind the sliding goalie. The 1-0 lead gave the team some breathing room as it broke for the period, but it was clear more work was needed. The team took the ice for the second period ready to get back to its game by committing to its systems and keeping it simple. Their focus paid off as they earned a power play just four minutes into the period. Megan Rittenhouse '20 easily won the face-off and as the play settled, Rittenhouse sent the puck to Sam DeLeo '21 at the top of the zone who then found a breaking Jenny Guider '20 who one-timed it past the goalie for the 2-0 lead. Following the goal, Westminster seemed to gain even more speed and confidence as the team continued to control the play forcing turnovers and peppering the Canterbury goalie with shots. Casey Winslow '21 broke up a play at center ice and then in beating her defenseman, pushed the puck forward to Adams who joined the play on the outside. Adams cut off the back-checker and pulled the goalie across the crease, while she slid the puck in on the far side. Westminster continued the solid play in the third period with Rittenhouse forechecking hard to produce a turn-over to Adams who found Winslow off the post for a one-timer and the fourth goal. The Martlets worked hard through the end as Guider found Rittenhouse in front who sent her own rebound into the net for the fifth and final goal. The win required the team to make significant adjustments to its level of play against a talented Canterbury team.

Jan. 18: Hockey - First Girls’ 4 vs. Northfield Mount Hermon School 1
Westminster earned another win on the road as they traveled north to Northfield Mount Hermon. The team set the goal of having a strong, consistent start and they delivered as the breakouts and forecheck were well-executed. Westminster earned a power play just five minutes in and Megan Rittenhouse '20 settled the puck below the goal line. Rittenhouse walked to the net and sent a perfect pass to Taylor Adams '20 who one-timed it to the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. NMH worked to respond to the goal and created some chaos in front of the Westminster net, but goalie Tatum Courtmanche '21 made three quick saves in a row to maintain the lead. The Martlets settled into some good offensive play in the final minutes as Jenny Guider '20 pressured the defense causing a turnover that she then sent to Adams who scored her second of the game to secure a 2-0 lead. The second period belonged to Westminster, but the NMH goalie was outstanding keeping the score locked at 2-0 after two periods. The third period started with even play, but then Westminster put on the pressure taking shot after shot on the NMH goal. Finally at the 11 minute mark, Cammi Ahern '22 buried a puck off a play from Guider. NMH came back at it and got on the board just 20 seconds later to make the score 3-1. Defenseman Caroline Pratt '22 looked to reclaim the momentum by taking the puck on the defensive blue line and rushing the NMH net, nearly scoring on the effort. After a series of penalties on both sides, Westminster secured a power play and with just one second remaining on the penalty, Adams struck again for the hat-trick off a play from Guider. It was a good team effort and a good milestone for the team to reach double-digit wins for the first time since 2015.

Hockey - Second Boys'
Jan. 15: Hockey - Second Boys’ 4 vs. Taft School 3
The Seconds hosted Taft on a pleasant Wednesday afternoon at Jackson Rink. The game was knotted at 3-3 in the waning seconds of the final frame when Jack Rockefeller '23 ripped a wrist shot from the left point over the glove hand of the Taft keeper with 46 seconds remaining to seal the win for the Martlets. Ryan Huntley '21 set up that goal after a terrific rush through neutral ice and a slippery inside-out move that put him in alone against the Taft goalie. The Rhino tender, who played a strong game throughout, made the first save, but Huntley seized the rebound, circled behind the Taft net, and hit Rockefeller crashing from the point. A thrilling end to an exciting back-and-forth matchup. The game was a spirited contest from the opening puck drop, occasionally spilling over into some chippy play from both sides particularly in the third period. Oscar Ball '22 got the Martlets on the board first, when he took a deft pass from linemate Newt Cutler '22 and fired it into the Rhino net barely four minutes into the game. The Martlets made it 2-0 three minutes later when Huntley buried a rebound off a Will Rizzo '21 shot from the right faceoff dot on a Westminster powerplay. Rockefeller assisted on that play with a nifty cross-ice pass to Rizzo. Unfortunately, Westminster let Taft back into the game at the very end of the first period, when a defensive breakdown and some running around in its own end led to a Taft goal. Martlet goalie Will Scott '20, who had another strong game and posted 27 saves overall, had no chance as his teammates left a Rhino untouched in the crease with the puck. And so the first period ended with the Seconds up 2-1. The second period was a contentious one, as Taft found its legs and consistently pressed the Martlet defense. The Rhinos notched the only goal of that period to make it 2-2 when the horn blew — clearly their physical play was wearing down the hard-working but depleted defensive corps of Nate Stevens '21, Rockefeller, Keegan Bankoff '22 and Sawyer von Jess '22 (steady blueliner Rex Flinn '21 was out with a lower body injury). Westminster regained the lead at the 10-minute market of the third period when Will Mazzaro '21 found the top corner of the net (Stevens and Cutler assisted on that goal). But to its credit, Taft kept coming, and a rash of penalties by both sides led to long minutes of 5-on-4, 4-on-4 and 5-on-3 opportunities for both sides. Only Taft, however, could take advantage, and got the equalizer when the Martlet penalty killers failed to clear the puck, which led to a clear advantage down low against keeper Scott for an unmarked Rhino to knock the rebound home. Some frenetic end-to-end play ensued in the final minutes of the game, until Huntley grabbed a puck on the far boards, streaked through the Rhino defense, and set up Rockefeller for the game-winner. While the coaches were very pleased with the outcome, the team will have to think about maintaining its composure in tight, physical games — and staying out of the penalty box when the game is on the line.

Jan. 17: Hockey - Second Boys' 1 vs. Hillside School 4
Second Boys’ Hockey faced off against another solid Hillside squad and struggled to find the back of the net. With the exception of several defensive breakdowns that led to goals in a span of about five minutes, this contest would have been closer for sure. Unfortunately, the Martlets had too many ill-advised penalties during the third stanza and were unable to mount a meaningful comeback. Rich Mugler '22 played solidly between the pipes and Willie Noble '20 scored the team's only goal late in the second by executing a beautiful top shelf snap shot.

Hockey - Second Girls'
Jan. 15: Hockey - Second Girls’ 10 vs. Choate Rosemary Hall 2
Second Girls’ Hockey traveled up to Choate Rosemary Hall for a late day tilt. Taking the ice on the heels of a close varsity win, the girls came out skating hard, as Ellie Cramer '22 started the scoring off a beautiful feed from Molly Rubin '22 on their first shift of the game. It was all Westminster from that point forward. Backstopped by goalie Ava Lynch '23, the defense played fast and smart for all three periods and even created some offense of their own off the sticks of Caroline McDermott '20 and Mckenzie Bloom '23. Dylan Bloom '23 carried the load on offense scoring five goals, two of which were shorthanded. Special note goes to the line of Susie Mahoney '20, Morgan Pineault '21 and Annabelle Smith '21, who played with energy and grit from their first shift to their last and generated myriad chances along the way.

Hockey - Third Boys'
Jan. 15: Hockey - Third Boys’ 2 vs. Simsbury High School JV 4

Squash - First Boys'
Jan. 15: Squash - First Boys’ 3 vs. Kingswood Oxford School 4
The Martlets won in straight games at Nos. 1 and 2 (Jack Turvey '20 and Alex Unruh '22) and lost in straight games at No. 7. When Peter Miller '22 closed out his four-game match 11-2, the Black and Gold held a 3-2 lead in the team match which meant that Westminster needed only to win at No. 3 or No. 5 to secure the victory. Unfortunately, the Wyverns were able to win both of those matches in four hard-fought games. At No. 3 Scott Lee '20 battled back from a 0-2 deficit to win the third game 11-8 before losing a competitive fourth game 7-11. Even more heartbreaking was the match at No. 5 where George Hartmann '23 lost the first game 12-14, won the second game 12-10, and lost the third game 12-14, before falling 7-11 in the fourth game. This was about as close as a squash match can get. The boys return to action Saturday in an away match against a strong squad from Kent.

Jan. 18: Squash - First Boys’ 0 vs. Kent School 7
Coach Michael Cervas and captain Mac Dye '20 knew that this match against Kent would be very challenging considering that Kent's No. 2 player last year is now playing No. 5 for the Lions. And they were right. Kent's squad surrendered only a total 55 points in the seven matches played, winning all seven in straight games. Alex Unruh '22 battled valiantly at No. 1 (in place of the injured Jack Turvey '20), losing (2), (6), (5), while Travis Paulsen '20 at No. 7 gets the "nail" for his efforts in a (5), (9), (4) loss.

Squash - First Girls'
Jan. 15: Squash - First Girls’ 7 vs. Suffield Academy 0
First Girls’ Squash was just too powerful for Suffield to handle, winning 7-0. All but one of the matches ended with a 3-0 score. Up and down the ladder the girls put pressure on their opponents with relentless length, mixing in short attacks when the situation presented itself.

Jan. 16: Squash - First Girls’ 7 vs. Kingswood Oxford School 0
As they had the day before, the Martlets secured another 7-0 win against a local competitor. Once again, the girls dropped just one game, which is not to say that they weren't pushed. Nine games overall were decided by the minimum possible two-point margin; it is a tribute to the girls' grit that they prevailed in all but one of them, highlighted by a 14-12 second game win by captain Rebecca Sargent '20 at No. 4 and a 16-14 seesaw second game won by Gemma Green '21 at No. 6.

Jan. 18: Squash - First Girls’ 7 vs. Ethel Walker School 0
First Girls’ Squash completed its season sweep of Hartford-area opponents, defeating crosstown rival Ethel Walker 7-0. Each of the girls earned a 3-0 win, with a particularly dominant performance turned in by captain Rebecca Sargent '20, who won 1, 0, 3 at No. 4.

Squash - Second Boys'
Jan. 15: Squash - Second Boys’ 8 vs. Salisbury School 0
Second Boys’ Squash dominated the Scarlet Knights from Salisbury, winning every game. While the Knights played enthusiastically, the team made too many errors and the Martlets were too steady. The nail for the match goes jointly to Sung Min Cho '22 and Jay Henry '23, two players at the bottom of the ladder who played opponents midway on the Knights' ladder and did very well against them. The entire team played with excellent sportsmanship.

Jan. 18: Squash - Second Boys’ 2 vs. Kent School 7
The Martlets fell to 3-2 on the season with a hard-fought 2-7 loss at Kent. Charlie Pappas '22 won a four-game match at No. 5 and Ral Reyes '21 won in straight games at No. 8. Gabe Lugo '23 also won a game against his opponent at No. 6. None of the other Martlets managed to take a game from their opponents although there were plenty of close games and good points. All of the boys played good squash against very talented players, never conceding and always working to keep balls alive.

Squash - Second Girls'
Jan. 15: Squash - Second Girls’ 6 vs. Kent School 1
The Martlets enjoyed a few days of practice before facing a tough Kent team. With several girls playing with the First Team, everyone had to play in unfamiliar positions on the ladder. Ultimately, Westminster’s depth proved too much as Nos. 2-8 won convincingly.

Jan. 16: Squash - Second Girls’ 7 vs. Kingswood Oxford School 0
Westminster hosted the Wyverns of Kingswood Oxford Jan. 16. They started strong by winning at Nos. 2, 4, 6 and 8 with victories by Anna Veber '21, Sasha van Vredenburch '21, Elise Strawbridge '21 and Kristina Oganyan '22. They also dominated at Nos. 1, 3, 5 and 7 with consistent squash by Georgia Nolan '20, Daniela Mays-Sánchez '20, Diana Tsibikova '21 and Loulou Rasmussen '22.

Squash - Third Boys'
Jan. 15: Squash - Third Boys’ 0 vs. Kingswood Oxford School 8
Westminster played hard, but lost to a solid and deep Kingswood Oxford JV squad. Despite losing all of its matches, the Martlets had some close contests that easily could have gone the in their favor. Oliver Fenner '22 steadily improved during his evenly-played match, losing his final game by a mere two points. Jonah Prentiss '22 fought back to tie up his match at one apiece, but lost his momentum in the final two games. The match of the day belonged to Grand Tantichot '22, who played perhaps his best all-around match to date. The fourth game alone was worth the price of admission, as both players returned shot after shot, and the score see-sawed back and forth. Tantichot's opponent hung on to win that game 13-11, and then took the final game to secure the victory.

Jan. 18: Squash - Third Boys’ 2 vs. Deerfield Academy 9
Westminster hosted Deerfield right before the impending snowstorm. The match was much closer than the final score indicated, with four matches coming down to the fifth and decisive game. Matthew Westlake '22, Will Warner '22 and Oliver Olson '23 were on the losing end of those matches, but were valiant in defeat. Grand Tantichot '22 continued his fine play, winning his five-setter in a thrilling 12-10 final game. Other close, well-fought matches included Connor Eddy '21, Max Hong '22 and Oliver Fenner '22. Eddy lost his second game 12-10, and Hong and Fenner both lost their fourth game by the same score. A few points going the other way would have changed the direction of those matches. The match of the day belonged to Jerry Wang '23, who started strong by winning the first two games, lost by a mere two points in the third and then eked out a 12-10 nail-biter to clinch the victory.

Squash - Third Girls'
Jan. 15: Squash - Third Girls’ 5 vs. Williston Northampton School 2
In this meetup, decisive victories came from Michaela Crabtree-Crowley '22, Alexa Dwyer '22, Chandler Green '23, Ceci Owen '22, Whitney Stroh '23 and Lindsey Valenti '22. These matches gave the Martlets the points needed to defeat Williston in a very close match.

Shin and Zhang put up the two fastest times in the 100 breaststroke, and Huang, Stedman, Harmon and Larock won the 400 freestyle relay to end the meet.

Swimming/Diving - First Girls'
Jan. 18: Swimming/Diving - First Girls’ 68 vs. Kent School 34
Jan. 18: Swimming/Diving - First Girls’ 67 vs. Ethel Walker School 34
The girls traveled to Kent and came away with wins over Kent and Ethel Walker, putting up some strong swims and dives, including a win and a new Kent pool record from Lucy Benoit ’23 in the 200 IM (2:10.73). The girls jumped out to an early lead by placing first and third in the 200 medley relay, swum by Benoit, Margaret Breen ’23, Katherine Ashe ’21 and Ellie Thorson ’21.
