A Thrilling Battle

It was almost expected that the hosting Martlets would find themselves amidst another thrilling battle with the visiting Berkshire Bears. From early on the Black and Gold identified their nemesis in a speedy and skilled Berkshire centerman who was difficult to contain, scoring as many as four goals over the course of the evening. With early Martlet goals coming from Ryan Szykowny '18 and SK Lee '18, the team trailed 2-6 after the second intermission. With a shortening of bench and a mantra of "getting back into this thing," the Martlets did just that and more in what perhaps was the most exciting period of play for the season. Szykowny ignited the team with a picture perfect deke on a penalty shot that told the fans to hold on. Reeling off three more goals in the final eight minutes -- another by Szykowny, one by Josh Cosentino '18, and a highlight reel tip in by Grant Noble '18, Third Boys’ Hockey had clearly seized the momentum and turned Jackson Rink into a raucous affair. But Berkshire's stealthy centerman was not yet done either, jumping on a Martlet miscue early in overtime and putting an end to Westminster's unlikely comeback. A special shout out to Azat Mukhametkulov '19, Galym Sarkytbayev '19, Michael Wade '19 and Alex Hu '19 who meaningfully jumped into the action for the first time this season, showing a high compete level and great personal strides since the season's start. The Martlets will host the Taft Rhinos next Saturday for their final game of 2017. It should be another good one.
