Martlets Work Hard In First Game

On a bright but windy and chilly day, Westminster Second Boys' Lacrosse lost 5 - 8 to a bigger and stronger Deerfield team. Westminster out-shot Deerfield 23 - 20 but never led the Big Green, although the Martlets tied the game at 1-1, 3-3, and 5-5 before letting Deerfield score 3 unanswered goals. Gavin Durham '13 led the Martlets with 3 goals, while Drew Poling '13 and Charlie Niles '14 each added 1 goal, and Ryan Seymour '15 had 3 assists, while Eli Zempsky '15 and Lorin Tobey '15 each had 1 assist. Christian Coquoz '12 had a very good game between the pipes and the attack of Sam Pope '12, Seymour, and Tobey rode very well throughout the game. Poling had a great game at the faceoff X, and Avery Leveston '15 was outstanding in his long stick middie play. Additional solid play came from game-captain Cullen Matt '13, newly-converted middie-from-goalie Austin Pope '14, and double Team Jersey winner Brennan Cross '15. The Martlets played with great intensity, but needed to shoot from better angles, anticipate better on rides, and connect with the open teammate on clears better if they were going to beat Deerfield. The Second Boys Laxers established a high level of intensity, execution, and team in their first game of the season and will look to improve all three areas when they play their second game of the season.
