Martlets Win Again In In Extra Period

For the second consecutive time the Third Boys' Lacrosse team found themselves trailing during the second half, only to mount a valiant comeback and send the game into overtime.  Unlike Wednesday's game against Rectory when the Martlets came up a goal short, they would not be denied and completed the comeback by overcoming a 5-2 deficit to win the game 6-5.  The Martlets went up first when Greg Jarvis '13 scored, but Pomfret quickly tied it.  Westminster scored again, this time on a nice play by Ben Baucherio '14, only to have Pomfret tie it up again less than a minute later, and that was how the half ended, with the teams locked at two.  The third quarter was all Pomfret, as they scored three goals to take a 5-2 lead with less than a minute left in the quarter.  The Martlets seemed defeated, and it looked as though the game might spiral out of control, when Elliot Gilford '11 decided to take matters into his own hands and scored a tremendous goal on an end to end rush that ignited the Westminster squad with only seconds left in the third quarter.  Jarvis added his second goal of the game early in the the fourth period to make it 5-4, and the rest of the period was all Martlets as they controlled the play and just peppered the Pomfret goalie, who, to his credit, made save after save.  Thanks to the stellar play of the Pomfret goalie, it looked as though the Martets would come up short, but with 37 seconds left to play Charlies Niles '14 who had been stymied on at least five shots that quarter, finally solved the Pomfret tender and sent the game into overtime.  Both teams had chances in the OT, but it was Jarvis, netting the hat trick who pushed Westminster over the top with a minute to play in the OT and sent the Martlets flying onto the field in celebration.
