Martlets Can't Top Avon Twice

Second Boys' Hockey took the short trip to Avon to try and grab their second victory from the Winged Beavers this season -- always a tough task. Things started out on a good note in the first period when David Hovey '09 converted passes from Oscar Ladd '11 and Drew Vermeer '10 during a power play chance. With the game tied at 1-1 in the second period, Sam Stanton '10 collected a stretch pass from Hunter Spannaus '09 and scored short-side on a breakaway. Entering the third frame up 2-1, Westminster got into some penalty trouble and successfully killed off a lengthy 5-3 opportunity but weren't as fortunate killing subsequent 5 on 4.  This equalizer really energized the Avon hosts. Avon then capitalized on some less than stellar in-zone coverage by the Martlets and were able to get two additional shots by Westminster goalie Matt Betten '10. Avon deserved this come-from-behind 4-2 victory by out working the Black and Gold during the final few minutes of this game. Westminster ends the season against Deerfield on Saturday.
