Team Effort Prevails

Second Boys' Hockey had a rematch with Choate and came out on top once again. Martlet forward Nick Crosby '10 got his team on the board first by wristing a pass from Charlie Keegan '10 and Captain Brian Smith '08 into the Wild Boar net. Tim Gray '11 increased the first period lead for the home team after collecting a textbook Davey Hovey '09 drop pass. Defenseman Oscar Ladd '11 also got an assist on the play. In the second period, Hovey received a stretch pass from Smith and tallied a goal of his own to up the score to 3-0. Westminster increased the lead by four during the final stanza when Sam Stanton '10 collected a Tim Gray feed and roofed a shot shortside. Unfortunately, the Martlets couldn't maintain a shutout for goalies Matt Betten '10 and Steve Seymour '10 (who split the game between the pipes). A weak Martlet clearing attempt resulted in a very nice Wild Boar shot and goal midway through the final frame. Westminster closed the game with a very patient, well-executed power play -- Drew Vermeer '10 collected a pretty Davey Hovey cross-ice pass and fired a shot past the Choate netminder (Joe Putko '08 also got a assist on the play). This was a good team effort, particularly with five players sidelined on account of injury. The Martlets played smart, disciplined and structured hockey against a solid Choate club. The team has a rematch against Loomis this Wednesday.
