First Girls' Hockey Come Away With First Win

The first game of the year is always wrought with nervous bellies and this game was no different. Westminster started flying all over the ice, and in the third shift Nicole Palazzo ‘08, pounced on a rebound from a Bethany Dymarczyk ‘08 slapshot. But instead of energizing the team, the Martlets let down. St. Marks promptly tied the score at 1-1. The second period was a repeat of the first. Westminster was carrying the play and getting opportunities. Sara Ugalde ‘10 scored, but once
again, St. Marks tied it up soon after a Martlet powerplay. St. Marks would not be denied and scored the next two. When the period finally ended, the score was 4-2 St. Marks. In the third, the Black and Gold came out strong. Westminster had a number of chances but could not score, then Kayla Lessard '08 came up with a couple of huge saves and the team's luck changed. Ugalde
scored again on a quick shot into the upper corner, and then Dymarczyk dumped the puck into the zone on the goalie who misplayed it and it went into the net; it was a tie game. This time, however, Westmninster did not let up.  With 2:46 to play, Emily Walsh ‘09 beat a defenseman at the blueline, went the length of the ice, and scored the game winner. The tam was very
resilient which is a good sign for the future. A very good Kent squad is next.
