Martlets Defeat Suffield

It was Senior Day at Suffield and the Martlets had a good match on their hands. Initial clouds gave way to nice patches of sun. The match started with all of the singles and #3 doubles. Co-captain Luna Yang ‘26 played her best match of the season by staying within herself and allowing her precision, power, and retrieving to shine. Co-captain Avery Gray ‘26 was her usual kind and tenacious self. She lent her opponent her own sunglasses to help in the sun, but didn’t give any ground during rallies. Sixth formers Emily Fonner and Clara Covill both came up short in their bids for victory, but not in their sportsmanship and efforts. Fonner tied her match at 8-8 before losing in a tie-breaker. Her opponent managed very well against numerous strong serves. The Westy girls swept the doubles matches starting with Candice Hong ‘28 and Karen Li ‘28. Pippa Jervis ‘28 and Lake Carter ‘28 got off to a slow start, but finished strong. Lulu Dawson ‘27 and Edie Goodyear ‘28, a dynamite doubles team, had their toughest match of the season. Up early, they had to come from behind and then win in a tie-breaker. Goodyear made many stunning gets to go with Dawson’s fine precision at net. Because of subsequent matches there were no exhibitions today. The Grit and Grace Award today gets split with the Grit going to Goodyear and Dawson and the Grace going to Gray.
