The Martlets returned to our home courts in similar conditions to Wednesday, with pleasant temperatures and nice sunshine with the wind being an annoyance to all players and spectators. The Martlets braved the elements and the wait during Varsity Girls win against Porters well, and came out strong in the doubles points. Playing without #1 Liam Hibbard ‘27, the Martlets saw some new doubles pairings on the court. Playing together at #2 doubles, Will Henry ‘26 and Noah Maltby ‘28 were a well oiled machine and won quickly 8-1. Alex Brown ‘27 and Finn Hocking ‘26 were a strong pairing, quickly taking control with consistent groundstrokes and good net play for a 8-4 win at #1 doubles. Finally, Crosby Cutler ‘27 and Xavier Kahn ‘27 made their debut at #3 doubles with an 8-4 win at #3 doubles. These two continue to play solid doubles together and made for a good combination today. In the same situation as Wednesday, we took a 1-0 lead after doubles. Now shifting attention to singles, the Martlets looked to come out stronger in singles than Wednesday and they did just that. Noah Maltby ‘28 continued his strong run of form at #4 singles, quickly winning 6-1;6-0. Alex Brown ‘27 was next off with a 6-2;7-5 win in his debut at #1. His opponent was a strong lefty, but Alex used his leftyness more effectively and was a wall from the back. Daniel Frid ‘27 made his debut at #6 singles in a battle that began shortly after the doubles matches began. This was a very long match that saw Frid down a set and 2-5 at one point. He played his tenacious style of game to crawl back and force the second set to a breaker. Knowing he had to win two breakers to win the match, he dug in, played steady and took them both for the 3-6;7-6;1-0(10-5) victory to seal the win for the Martlets. Finn Hocking ‘26 played a very consistent opponent at #2 singles and battled from 1-4 in the second to close out the match 6-3;6-4. Will Henry ‘26 had a similar experience at #3 singles, battling through a very competitive second set to win the match 6-3;7-5. Jack Pickett ‘26 returned to action after getting injured Wednesday in a battle at #5. After a long first set which he won 6-4, they continued to battle in the second where the Pomfret player won the set 7-5. Given the late time, cold temperatures and already decided match result, the coaches agreed to skip the third set breaker. The Martlets will look to rest tomorrow in preparation for our upcoming three match week, beginning with Suffield on Monday at 4:45.
