Martlets Tie Portsmouth Abbey

The Martlets earned a 3-3 tie against Portsmouth Abbey on Friday night on the road, showcasing resilience while gaining valuable lessons in a tightly contested matchup. The Martlets opened the scoring late in the first period when Mya Polastry ‘27 found the back of the net. From the top of the faceoff circle, Polastry ripped a shot top corner, firing it past the Portsmouth Abbey goaltender to give Westminster a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission. Westminster added to its lead late in the second period with a well-executed transition play. Senior Captain Izzy Hurkala carried the puck through the neutral zone and slid a pass wide to Junior Captain Bella Zapata as the Martlets entered the offensive zone. Hurkala drove hard to the net, creating space for Zapata, who stepped into her shot and snapped it top right corner to put Westminster up 2-0. Entering the third period with confidence, the Martlets knew they needed to tighten up their play to maintain their momentum. Portsmouth Abbey responded with urgency, scoring just two minutes into the period to cut the deficit in half. The home team continued to press and capitalized on a power-play opportunity just under halfway through the period to tie the game at two. Westminster answered back with determination. Kiera Dumas ’29 gave the Martlets the lead with a goal from the point, burying a shot through traffic to make it 3-2. Portsmouth Abbey refused to go quietly, pulling the goalie late and scoring with just over a minute remaining to force overtime. Despite strong chances at both ends, neither team was able to find the game-winner in overtime, and the contest ended in a 3-3 draw. While the result ended in a tie, the game provided valuable takeaways as Westminster continues to build and improve moving forward.

Our Girt & Grace player of the game is Kiera Dumas ‘29! Kiera had a big third period goal for the Martlets and received recognition from her teammates for her consistent hard work and energy.
