Martlets Fall to Canterbury

For a rematch of the final game of the Ethel Walker Holiday Tournament, the Martlets traveled through the snowy hills of Litchfield to face off against Canterbury for the second time in a month. Westminster started with one of their most productive halves of the season, playing high energy defense and capitalizing on open shot opportunities. Five different Martlets entered the scoring column, including Melody El-Amin’s first basket of the season off a strong offensive rebound. At the half, Westminster was leading the Saints by 3 points. However, Canterbury took advantage of Westminster’s tired legs and some slow defensive rotations, hitting two open 3 pointers to reclaim the lead in the third quarter. The Martlets continued to battle with outstanding defensive efforts from Parker Perillo ‘26, Gianna Monaco ‘27, and Charlotte Evanko ‘29. Kaitlyn Buda ‘27 and Chloe Donovan ‘29 also helped secure valuable rebounds against a large Canterbury frontcourt. In the closing minutes, Westminster had to send Canterbury to the line to try and generate more possessions, but the Saints shot a high free throw percentage and the Martlets were unable to convert on open looks down the stretch. In spite of the loss, the Martlets found many positives in today’s effort and will look forward to two days of practice before hosting Hotchkiss on Wednesday.
