Martlets Fall To Lawrenceville

Westminster and Lawrenceville opened the 2026 calendar year with a competitive matchup at Jackson Rink, as the Martlets brought strong energy from the opening faceoff. Despite Westminster’s early jump, Lawrenceville struck first just a few minutes into the game, a goal that shifted momentum and allowed the visitors to settle in. Lawrenceville controlled much of the remainder of the opening period, generating sustained offensive-zone time and outshooting the Martlets. The second period was more evenly played in terms of shots, but Lawrenceville continued to produce the majority of the high-quality scoring chances. With just under 30 seconds remaining in the period, senior captain Bella Zapata provided a spark for Westminster, driving down the left side and ripping a high shot past the goaltender to tie the game at 1-1 heading into the third. The final period delivered end-to-end action and high drama. Westminster built momentum early, creating several strong scoring opportunities, but five minutes into the period a Lawrenceville shot was initially ruled no goal before officials conferred and determined the puck had crossed the line, giving Lawrenceville a 2-1 lead. The game remained tightly contested, though Lawrenceville extended its advantage to 3-1 on a point shot that deflected through traffic, just after the Martlets had successfully killed off a penalty. Westminster refused to back down, pressing hard in the final minutes and generating a flurry of chances, including extended power-play time with both a 5-on-3 and 5-on-4 advantage, as well as additional looks with the goalie pulled. Despite the late push, the Martlets were unable to convert, closing out a hard-fought and entertaining game.

Our Grit and Grace player of the game is Kuylie Kim ‘29! Kuylie has consistently worked hard for the Martlets all season and her efforts today played a big role for the team.
