Martlets Drop Tight Game to KUA

The Martlets faced off against the Wildcats from KUA this morning in Game 1 of the Flood Marr Holiday Tournament. After a restful night at the Sheraton Hotel in Needham, Mass., the team was eager to get the tournament underway.
Both teams came out ready to play from the opening puck drop. The Martlets put together a strong first period and, despite generating several quality scoring chances, were unable to solve the KUA netminder. Shots were even at 12 apiece after the opening frame, with both goalies making key saves at important moments.
The second period saw each team earn power-play opportunities, but it was KUA that struck first. A point shot created a loose puck in the slot, and after the Martlets were unable to clear the zone, the Wildcats capitalized to take a 1–0 lead. The response from the Black and Gold was immediate and determined. Matt Hanrahan ’26 blocked a shot in the Martlet zone, picked up the loose puck through the neutral zone, and fired a shot that beat the KUA goalie to knot the game at 1–1. With two periods complete, the teams headed to the final frame deadlocked.
The third period delivered an exciting stretch of hockey for the fans. The Martlets created several chances but were unable to find the go-ahead goal. Instead, KUA capitalized on a broken play deep in the Martlet end, which led to a scramble in front of the net. The puck narrowly slid past Caden Weichselbaumer ’28 with just under five minutes remaining. Weichselbaumer was outstanding all day, making a number of strong saves to keep the Martlets in the game.
The Martlets are back in action shortly as they take on Milton.
