Martlets Place 8th at Founders

The Westminster boys’ cross-country team competed in the Founder’s League Championship 5k this past Saturday. The varsity team finished in eighth place overall and had all seven runners finishing in personal best times. Westminster was led by Michael Wang (’27) in 18:34 and captain Nick Lopriore (’26) in 18:58, as the only Martlets to join the 18-minute club this year. Aidan O’Callaghan (’26) had the biggest drop in time this week, running an excellent and strong race start to finish, finishing in 20:05 and leaving everything he had out on the course this week.
The junior varsity team finished in sixth place overall after being projected to finish in 8th, with 12 out of 14 runners able to strike personal best times at the perfect time in the season. Scoring points for the Martlets in order were Eli Heffer (’29) leading the way in 35th overall, Adam Heffer (’29), Elijah Woodard (’29), Niraj Prakash (’26), and Jeff Shao (’26). This result though was thanks to Jason Xie (’28) who was the sixth and deciding runner who pushed himself and helped break a rare tie with Kingswood-Oxford to move the Martlets just ahead.
This week’s Grit & Grace Award goes to Charlie Zhang ('29) who despite an injured toe and not running much in the past week and a half, had a strong race and a personal best 5k time despite being injured.

PS: Next week, the team will be participating in our final race, the NEPSAC Division II Championship 5k.
