Martlets Fall to Deerfield

The Westminster Fourth Boys Soccer team, affectionately known as the Quad Squad, hit the road on a hot fall Saturday to travel to Deerfield Academy for their season opener. While traffic for the Big E slowed down their bus en route, the Martlets came out of a short warm-up energized, taking control of the beginning of the game. Matt Polastry ’29 used his speed to move the ball into the box and sent a beautiful, bending kick into the top right corner of the net for a goal. Deerfield gained momentum late in the first half, but keeper Kareum Skovron-Rasheed ’29 made some huge saves, and defender Grayson Augsberger ’29 stymied several Deerfield scoring chances with skillful and tough defensive play to keep Westminster in the lead. Deerfield came out in the second half ready to play and finally found their rhythm, scoring three quick goals to take a 3-1 lead. To their credit, the Martlets battled until the final whistle, creating some of their best scoring chances in the game’s final minutes. CJ Berry ’29 was especially tough and productive on defense, and Archie Downing ’29 competed with grit and skill all afternoon at the center midfield position. The Grit and Grace award goes to Kareum Skovron-Rasheed ’29 for making over a dozen saves in net. The Quad Squad will get back to work on Monday in preparation for Wednesday’s home opener against Suffield Academy.
