Martlets Defeat Ethel Walker

Westminster opened their season with a strong showing, earning a 1-0 victory over The Ethel Walker School in the first game of the year. Throughout the 60 minute game, both teams persisted through the ever changing weather- heat, rain, and finally some sunshine just before the final buzzer. From the start, both teams had energy and looked excited to kick off the season. As the Martlets settled in, they began to control the tempo, maintaining possession and applying consistent pressure on Walker's defense. The lone goal of the game came off the stick of senior Caroline Callen, who capitalized on a well-executed offensive push to give Westminster the lead. Although this was the only goal of the game, there was not a lack of chances for the Martlets. The team worked as a unit to push the ball up field, leading to offensive corners and a few grade A scoring chances. Credit to Walker’s goalie for making some great saves! Throughout the game, the Martlet’s midfield and defense did a great job shutting down any potential opportunities and kept Westminster in the lead. Especially in the fourth quarter when Ethel Walker mounted a determined late-game push, creating a few dangerous chances in search of an equalizer. Westminster’s back line held firm under pressure, preserving the clean sheet and securing a well-deserved win to kick off the season on a high note. The Martlet’s will hit the field again on Wednesday in a neutral site game at Pomfret School taking on BB&N at 4pm.

Today’s Grit & Grace player of the game went to Junior forward Stella Spitz! Stella’s consistent effort played a big role in the Martlet’s offensive success. Her communication and positivity also helped the team get better each quarter! Gigi Filippetti ‘26 and June Hodson ‘28 also received positive recognition from their teammates for their strong effort on the field today.
