Season Opener at Choate

It was a beautiful day for a cross country race in New Milford, CT––bright sun, seventy-degree temps, and dozens of teams from across New England pouring onto the course at Canterbury School. The Westminster girls’ team competed in the Canterbury Invitational, which featured teams from 21 prep schools in either the Division I or Division II race; Westminster competed in the former. The Martlets held their own against the competitive field. Jasper Paul ‘22 was Westminster’s first finisher; her time of 23:47 was a huge PR in the second cross country race of her career. Lila Smith ‘25, who started out with Paul––the two set out together near the front of the pack––did not finish the race due to severe breathing difficulties in the last mile. Captain Emma Mason ‘23 was Westminster’s next finisher, crossing with another (nearly ninety second) season PR. She was followed by Catie McGuigan ‘23, whose race was her first for the black-and-gold. Elena Roselló Cuevas ‘23 and Madison Khuu ‘24 worked together for much of the race and recorded massive PRs, besting their times from last weekend’s Choate Invitational by over two minutes. Captain Janessa Yan ‘22 battled back from a hip injury to run her first race of the season, finishing shortly behind Roselló Cuevas and Khuu and rounding out the squad. The team looks forward to competing on their home course for the first time this season in next week’s Richard Miller Invitational.
