Saints Hold On to Lead Despite Second Half Westminster Surge

Westminster First Girls’ Lacrosse played its final road game of this season on a sunny day in New Milford, Connectiut against Canterbury School. The Martlets had great energy going into the first half, scoring the first two goals of the game, both thanks to Casey Winslow ‘21, within the first three minutes to put them up. The Saints then took advantage of draw controls to score three of their own. Westminster struggled to maintain possession, throwing the ball away which allowed for the home team to put a few more in the back of the net. Westminster trailed 5-8 at halftime and entered the second half with the focuses of possession, smart shots, and avoiding giving away easy shots on 8m free positions. The Martlets improved on all of these focuses in the second 25 minutes of the game and played until the final whistle, scoring the final three goals of the game within the final three minutes. The Martlets did not stop fighting, exhibiting both tremendous grit and grace during this battle between two talented squads. Joining Winslow as goal scorers were Georgia Nolan ‘20 who posted 7 points on the day (5 goals and 2 assists), Ridgely Green ‘20 (4 goals) and Sam DeLeo ‘21 (1 goal). Nina Ahl ‘22 was solid on defense and came up with two ground balls off Westminster caused turnovers in the defensive end that both were converted to Martlet goals. Westminster heads into the final two weeks of play with four home games.
