Late Rally Leads to Exciting Win Over Kent

Westminster scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning against a fine Kent team to edge the Lions 2-1. The game was an outstanding pitchers’ duel between Westminster’s Callista Adorno '22 and Teagan Graham of Kent. Adorno allowed only three Kent singles, and the Martlets managed just four hits on the day. Westminster had solid fielding throughout the contest. Mandy Busky '21 caught a strong game, Allie Masthay '21 had two nice plays at third base, Gabby Nemarich '20 was efficient at shortstop and Hailey Tullo '22 was sure handed at first base. Alayna Tawney '19 and Bethany Winters '20 each made important catches to help secure the victory. The game was scoreless until the fourth inning, when Kent's Gia Marie Orsino singled to drive in a run. In the sixth inning, Westminster answered with an exciting two out rally. Adorno placed a perfect bunt and advanced to third base on a throwing error. Busky then singled to tie the game at 1-1. Nemarich followed by driving a triple to centerfield, and the Martlets had a 2-1 lead. In the top of the seventh frame, Kent had the tying run on third base but Nemarich made a nice play on a hard-hit ground ball to end the game. Westminster next will play at Loomis Chaffee Monday. The game time has been moved to a 5 p.m. start.
