Martlets Get Gritty Win

On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, Westminster hosted Miss Porter's on Harrison field in a Founder's league matchup that required some serious grit. While Porter's struck with an early tally, the Martlets were able to score the next 7 straight goals to take the lead at the end of the first quarter. Alex Musser 26, Avan Aponte '28, and Abbey Cirelli '27 contributed the bulk of the goals to help us go into the half with a 10-3 lead. The lead was protected by a strong defensive effort anchored by Taleah Leonard ’26, while Cameron Perillo ’28 proved instrumental in the transition game, providing a number of clears under heavy pressure. However, the momentum turned quickly in the second half as Porter's  mounted a relentless comeback, rattling off seven unanswered goals to knot the score at 10-10 late in the third quarter. At which point, Cirelli found Kate Epke ’27 on a well-timed cut from behind the cage, resulting in a crucial goal that stopped the Porter’s run and reclaimed an 11-10 lead.  Later in the fourth quarter, with the score tied at 11-11, Aponte took charge, driving hard to the cage and burying a bounce shot to give Westminster the lead for good. The win showed the character of this team, as they were able to stop the Porter’s run and find a way to win in the closing moments. The  team heads to Greenwich on Wednesday to play Sacred Heart.
