Martlets Fall to Bearcats

The girls traveled to Lakeville today to face the #2 team in New England. The Martlets were playing without #2 Elle Wilson, while the Bearcats held out the top of their lineup to make the matchup more competitive. It had the desired result, as many of the matches featured good rallies, but the hosts still came away with 3-0 wins at all but one position. Highlights included Anna Min ‘27, who found some success at #7 by virtue of increasingly sharp hitting (4, 5, 6); Natasha Johnson ‘27 at #6, who found traction by defending tenaciously and counterpunching effectively (6, 6, 6); Chase Hager ‘26, whose sharp forehand almost earned her a game (5, 3, 9); and Emily Fonner ‘26, who conjured up a variety of ways to hit winners at #4 (6, 9, 7). The best match of the day was played by Sophia Lazor ‘27 at #1. It took her a couple of games to settle on the most effective mix of patience and aggression, not an easy task given the pressure her opponent applied. Finding her range and hitting some deft drops, she was able to take the only game on the afternoon for the Martlets before falling in four (5, 5, (8), 7). The girls will take a break now and get ready for the final three weeks, including two tournaments that should feature their most competitive matches of the season.
