Martlets Knock Off Rhinos

Our Thirds Boys’ Soccer team made the trip southwest to Watertown, CT to take on the Taft School Rhinos. Team energy on the bus ride set the tone for the afternoon; the coaches (and bus driver) were quite impressed with the playlist and enthusiasm for the ride! Playing on a turf field for the first time this season added to the excitement of the afternoon. Taft was strong from the outset and quickly established control in their offensive end of the field. Solid defense on the inside by Brooks BeVier ‘28 and Charlie Davis ‘28 stymied the Rhinos. Taft maintained pressure throughout the half and earned four corner kicks. The Martlets final broke free as combination play starting from Gavin Smith ‘28 through Arthur Lilley ‘27 led to a finishing shot by Tyler Beaudoin ‘28. In the 26th minute Lilley doubled the lead.
Early in the second half Ryan Holmes ‘28 scored on a penalty kick to put the Martlets up 3-0. The Rhinos continued to apply pressure and ended the game with 12 corner kicks (to our zero). Taft finally tallied after a defensive lapse as we tried to clear the ball. Thomas Merrill ‘28 was strong in net with many saves. Our Grit & GRACE player of the game is Ryan Holmes for his consistent and steady play combined with his endurance and leadership. We host Loomis Chaffee on Saturday.
