The girls got their season off to a great start with a strong win against their nearest rival. And they accomplished it without regular no. 2, co-captain  Elle Wilson’26. At no. 1, Sophia Lazor ‘27 was in complete control, giving up just eight points in her three game win. At no. 2, Marti Jaramillo Aman ‘27 also won in three, using her characteristic mix of power and patience. The rest of the wins did not come easily for the Martlets, as the Pelicans were effective counter-punchers and tenacious defenders. Co-captain Emily Fonner ‘26 was extended to five games at no. 3, but she was not about to let the match get away, winning a gritty game five at 11-8. Co-captain Chase Hager ‘26 just got edged out in her second game, but used her superior drives to take her no. 4 match in four. A similar scenario played out at no. 6, where Natasha Johnson ‘27 played two tight games in the middle ((11),10) before dominating her last game with power as well as touch. In the highlight of the day, Sophia Wen ‘29 won her first match as a Martlet, dropping only her third game at 13-15 at no. 5, but displaying a promising mix of sharp drives and deadly drops in her 3-1 win. Another local rival will be on tap when the girls host Miss Porters on Wednesday.
