Martlets Defeat Salisbury

For Parents & Family Weekend the Thirds Boys’ Soccer Team provided plenty of entertainment for the fans! With a chance to avenge an early season loss, your Martlets came out with a short bench, but plenty of energy and effort. Salisbury was led by #6 who opened the scoring only two minutes into the game. He then doubled the Scarlet Knights’ lead about the midpoint of the frame. He is a well skilled player who made many of our players overcommit and then pay for that aggressiveness. With about 2 minutes remaining in the half Gavin Smith ‘28 served a nice through ball for Ryan Holmes ‘28 who gently nudged the ball by both a defender and the goalie before finishing with his left foot.
In the second half we tied the score when Smith poked home a loose ball in the box off a feed from Sam McGarvey ‘28. About 10 minutes later we finally took the lead when Charlie Davis ‘28 put home a rebound off the goalie on a shot by Holmes. Unfortunately, only a few minutes later #6 from Salisbury finished his hat trick for the day. With about 10 minutes left in the game, McGarvey earned his second assist on the afternoon as he took possession of the ball in our defensive end, dribbled most of the left sideline, and then dished a nice pass for Paul Coccaro ‘28 to put away the game winner!
Despite #6 raking up goals, our defense actually played very well. Shout-outs to Dylan Curtis ‘28, Brooks BeVier ‘28, Ethan McQueeney ‘27, and Charlie Davis ‘28 (others also rotated through on the back line). Henry Brooks ‘28 played in goal and made many saves and headed away a ball just outside the box late in the first half to prevent a scoring chance for Salisbury. Our GRIT & Grace player of the game is Ryan Holmes who scored once, had an assist, distributed the ball well from central midfield, and in his own words “put #6 in a seatbelt” when we moved him back to mark that player towards the end of the game!
Enjoy the long weekend…at Deerfield next Wednesday!
