Martlets Win in Extra Innings

Westminster School JV Baseball Martlets snatched the lead late in their 5-4 victory over Avon Old Farms on Saturday. The game was tied at four in the top of the eighth when Tyler Beaudoin led off with an infield single. After executing a perfect fake bunt steal and then laying down a great sacrifice bunt, Eli Heffer was able to move Beaudoin to third with one out. With two outs, Massimo Guarnieri put a ball in play and beat the throw to first base, which allowed Beaudoin to score the would-be game-winning run.

Avon went up 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth before Westminster tied the game in the top of the fifth thanks to a single by Will Derbyshire, a ground out by Adam Heffer, and a single by Paul Coccaro. The Winged Beavers took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, 4-3, but the Martlets would respond. Kyle Zhou singled up the middle on an 0-2 count to move the tying run across.

Tyler Beaudoin earned the win for Westminster after a solid three-inning start from Lucas Steniger. Beaudoin gave up five hits and one run over five innings, striking out three and walking two.

The Martlets accumulated 10 hits in the game. Steniger and Beaudoin each collected two hits, and Derbyshire, Zhou, and Heffer each drove in one run. Beaudoin stole four bases; Westminster stole a total of eight bases in the game.

It was a really good defensive performance for the Martlets in key spots - three different times they executed flawlessly in first and third situations to get outs and twice to get the third out before the runner at third could score. Really proud of the guys and their execution in all phases of the game.
