Martlets Fall to Pelicans

The rain gods allowed the team a window to play today and despite a few sprinkles here and there, the rain didn’t come until the last match finished. On senior day, the team celebrated five sixth formers, Harriet Leventhal, Clara Covill, Emily Fonner, and co-captains Avery Gray and Luna Yang. Gray and Yang played four years on the team, including their freshman year at #3 doubles when they won all of their matches, including two on one day. Today, they had the most dominant win. Lake Carter ‘28 and Pippa Jervis ‘28 moved down a spot and won a convincing match as well. Covill and Leventhal were in a tight exhibition match all the way through with countless deuces. Georgia Ursano ‘28 played well against an opponent who consistently put the ball just inside the baseline. Karen Li ‘28 and Candice Hong ‘28 played a very consistent team. Li had a number of down the line winners. In exhibition, Angelina Mertz ‘29 won her first match of the season against a hard hitter. Mertz is becoming more and more consistent. She knows where to place the ball. The most close and exciting matches were the top three singles matches. With Gray and Yang moving to doubles, Edie Goodyear ‘28 and Lulu Dawson ‘27 stepped up to 2 and 3 on the singles ladder while Emily Fonner ‘ 26 moved up to number 1. The match score was knotted at 2-2 with only these three to go. Dawson was down 6-7, Goodyear was up 6-5 with Fonner at 7-7. It doesn’t get much closer. Dawson and Goodyear were relentless in chasing balls down and played many long rallies. Fonner had a lot of big serves and sharp winners. After Dawson and Goodyear’s matches were split, Fonner ended up in a tie-break for the team match. Coming up just short didn’t dampen the team’s spirits. Grit & Grace awarded to Fonner, Goodyear and Dawson for so agreeably stepping up and for so tenaciously hanging in in their matches.
