Martlets Defeat Lions for Back to Back Wins

The team earned back to back wins with a solid showing today on the back six courts plus one of the upper courts. Early on the match seemed like it might be 4-3 as the girls were down early in four of the seven matches - all on simultaneously. The theme of the day was one of comebacks however. At  #1 Co-Captain Avery Gray ‘26 won eight of the last nine games for an 8-2 win against an opponent who mirrored her style if not her grit. At #2 Co-captain Luna Yang ‘26 fought back from 1-4 to an 8-5 win after making herself tough to beat. #3 Emily Fonner ‘26 was a sharp shooter today, making quick work in her match. #4 Clara Covill ‘26 found herself in a 0-5 hole before winning five of the final eight games to fall just short of a comeback win. Karen Li ‘28 and Candice Hong ‘28 were similarly down and fought back with lots of long rallies and great teamwork, picking each other up. #1 and #2 doubles didn’t drop a game and gave the team an early boost while other matches were still developing. Georgia Ursano ‘28 stepped in to join Pippa Jervis ‘28 at #1 while Edie Goodyear ‘28 and Lulu Dawson ‘27 continued their strong overall play. The grit and grace award goes jointly to Pippa Jervis and Georgia Ursano who played rock, paper, scissors to determine who got to fill in for an exhibition doubles match with Angelina Mertz ‘29. Ursano won the rock, paper, scissors and went on to win again with Mertz.
