Martlets Open Season with W

It was a chilly day in Simsbury as the Bearcats came to town to begin the season. The Martlets sent ace Matt Shea '26 to the bump. He battled through 4 innings - with temps in the mid 30s - it was difficult to grip and command pitches. The Martlets got out to a 3-0 lead on hits from Monty Gantz '26 and Ethan Villacis '27. Hotchkiss would get three back the 4th to make it a 4-3 game. The black and gold added to their lead with two runs in the 5th, one of them driven home by Xavier Izquierdo's '27 sac fly. He would also record the final nine outs on the mound to pick up his first save in a Westminster uniform. Overall, the Martlets displayed toughness that will be critical to carry with them throughout the spring. The team takes on Taft on Wednesday.
