  • Cross Country - First Girls'

    2018 - 2019
    Head Coach: Betsy Heckman

First Girls’ Cross Country trains students to be runners and runners to be stronger athletes. This formula prepares team members to face challenging competition but also to be confident in their athletic strength. The girls compete in a nine-meet schedule, which includes five large scrimmages and invitational meets against many of the traditional powerhouse teams in the New England prep schools.

The girls’ squad trains in the Simsbury area, using the many local parks for longer training runs. Westminster is blessed with hundreds of miles of trails within fifteen minutes of campus, allowing runners to experience a variety of terrain and outdoor beauty during training runs.

During home competitions, the team races on a 5 km (3.1 mile) course on campus which incorporates a long section of spectator viewing as well as a challenging section in the woods of the school’s 230 acre campus. The team also makes extensive use of the school's weight rooms and swimming pool to complement the running program and to help prevent injuries.

The Girls' Cross Country team is coached by Betsy Heckman and Claudia McGuigan, with Mark de Kanter serving as the head of program. All coaches come to the sport from different backgrounds yet share a common passion for running and assisting young people to appreciate and meet their goals in this sport.

This fall, the team hosts the annual Richard Miller Invitational meet, an event that brings fourteen other schools to the campus annually to run our challenging and spectator-friendly course.
