AP Biology Students Gain Hands-On Medical Experience

Students in AP Biology traveled to Hartford Hospital’s Center for Education, Simulation and Innovation (CESI) April 20 to gain hands-on experience at a training facility used by medical professionals from around the world to learn new techniques and perfect their craft. Teacher Mark de Kanter ’91, Dean of Faculty Greg Marco and Head Athletic Trainer Stacy Ciarleglio accompanied the group.

The students began their visit by watching a live robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery on a prostate gland. The visuals were intense and provoked many questions from the students to one of the attending doctors about how the surgery was performed.

The students then went through four different stations in which they tried their hand at laparoscopic and robot-assisted simulations, were rated on their effectiveness of resuscitation techniques, experienced cutting-edge virtual reality technology and assisted in a simulated birth.

“The CESI director and staff could not have been more accommodating and welcoming to our students, and we left with a deep appreciation of the innovation and expertise at Hartford Hospital,” said Mr. de Kanter.
