The Most Complete Half of the Season

After a high-energy Tuesday practice, Westminster traveled a town over to play Avon Old Farms. The Winged Beavers were, as always, skilled, tough, and well coached, but Westminster was not intimidated and came ready to play. Avon controlled the ball in the first quarter and the Martlet defense met the challenge, communicating well and playing tough and smart defense. They held Avon to two goals and Ty Lambert ‘25 scored on a fast break for the Martlets, making the score 2-1 after the first. Avon and Westminster traded goals in the second quarter with Cayden Darnowski ‘25 adding two more to his team-leading tally. Derrick Logan ‘27 played well in goal, making key saves and quarterbacking the defense. Avon added a goal right at the end of the second quarter, leaving the score at 6-3. Despite the score, it was Westminster’s most complete half of the season against a very good team. In the second half, the Martlets struggled to control the ball and eventually the Winged Beavers took over, stringing together several quick goals and putting the game out of reach for Westminster. Andrew Sala ‘27 added a fourth goal for Westminster in the fourth quarter–the Martlet’s first lefty goal of the season and Henry Baird ‘26 played his best game of the season on defense. Westminster will look to rest up during Thursday’s Hill Holiday before welcoming a different Avon squad to Simsbury for Friday’s match-up.
