Martlets Fall to Taft

The boys ran into a gauntlet in Watertown, but truthfully had one of the better competitive mindsets so far this season and there was plenty to be taken away. The theme of the day was to see how we play with no added “internal” pressure and see how many windows we could create to come away with some extra games, and doubles certainly had some chances. Logan Sun ‘24 and Co-Captain David Suit ‘24 teamed up again at #1 and had plenty of entertaining exchanges, as well as solid serving. After getting down quick, credit to Co-Captain Will Whiting ‘24 and Finn Hocking ‘26 to get their way back into the match and put the sweat to the dual senior opponents. At #3 was Hugh Olson ‘25 and Rookie Liam Hibbard ‘27, who although may have been frustrated with the second half of the pro set, still found their way to keep most of the games competitive and tight. Similar story with Alex Chen ‘24 and Will Henry ‘26 in the exhibition slot–some great volley work and steady play from the baseline. Down 1-0 entering singles, credit to Taft for keeping their foot on the gas, with Suit, Whiting and Olson dropping their matches at #1, #2 and #4 so seal the win for the Rhinos. Sun and Hibbard played some of their steadiest tennis of the season at various points in the #3 and #5 spots respectively, while Hocking battled a savvy, strong and consistent opponent at #6. Still some things to tweak when it comes to embracing natural tennis anxiety, but it was great to see Sun and Hibbard especially almost force a deciding superbreaker in their matches and make their opponents earn the win. We will be back at home this Saturday looking to bounce back against Williston.
