Convincing Wins

The Westminster Boys JV Golf team teed off for its 2024 campaign with convincing wins over the visiting Wolves and Wildcats. The conditions were a little bit of a challenge with a steady early spring breeze, cloudy and chilly weather, and an occasional sprinkle. The Martlets posted a solid 210 score – impressive for April golf in New England. Santino DeFazio ‘24 led the way with a strong 40. Nick Dowling ‘24 and Matteo De Luca ‘24 were tight on DeFazio’s bumper with a pair of 41s. Jack Fichthorn ‘26 and Grant Owen ‘24 contributed 44s to complete the scoring quintet. Also ably pulling his oar was Connor Murphy with a 47. Fichthorn’s gritty 44 included a 9 on the par 4 4th hole, the bane of many a golfer on this demanding Hopmeadow course. Dowling had the shot of the day, at least from this old coach’s vantage point, carving a nifty, Ballesteros-esque recovery draw from underneath the trees to 15 feet on the short par 5 6th. He calmly two-putted for his birdie. Overall, a good start to the season, with DeFazio, De Luca, and Murphy playing in their first golf matches, shaking off the nerves and playing like seasoned veterans fo the Florida mini-tours. Congratulations to Nick Zhou of Rectory, who was the medalist with an impressive 38. Next up for the Golfing Martlets: Farmington Valley rival Loomis on Saturday. The hospitality tents are going up at Hopmeadow, so cancel your plans and come support the Martlets as they take on the Pelicans.
