A Good Showing

On a questionable weather day in Simsbury, the Martlets took to the courts for the first time playing against Kent and did not have to take longer than a few minutes to break for rain. We started off with the doubles matches, as well as #4-6 singles matches. The Martlets started strong, winning the doubles point due to victories by #2 Doubles (Robert Yalda ‘24 and Cisco Lillien ‘24) and #3 Doubles(Xavier Kahn ‘27 and Crosby Cutler ‘27). Both of these teams played very well in their first matches playing together. At #1 doubles, Steven Chun ‘25 and Jack Pickett ‘26 played a great match but dropped a competitive 8-5 decision. In the singles matches played throughout the first round, Cole Hadden ‘26 and Connor Gray ‘26 dropped their singles matches in two sets, at #5 and #6 respectively. Meanwhile, Daniel Frid ‘27 played a solid and consistent match, winning 6-3 6-0 at #4. Finishing the first full round of matches locked at 2-2, focus turned to the front three courts where Steven, Jack and Robert were locked in competitive singles matches. At #3, Robert Yalda ‘24 dropped the first set 2-6, but made some solid adjustments early in the second set. He was ahead 3-0 before his opponent fought back to level the second set at 4-4, before pulling ahead to win the set 7-5. Meanwhile, Steven Chun ‘25 also dropped the first set at #1 singles. He too made some great adjustments in the second set, but it was not enough today, falling 6-2;6-3 to a tough opponent. Finally, at #2 singles, Jack Pickett ‘26 made some excellent adjustments throughout the match, especially on his serve, to close out a tough opponent 7-5 in the first set. He used this momentum to take the second set in more routine fashion 6-1. Overall, it was a good first showing from the Martlets but also showed room for improvement throughout the season. The Martlets look forward to hosting Pomfret at home on Saturday.
