A Classic Pitcher’s Duel

After some early season rainouts, the Martlets played their first game against Suffield. It was a classic pitcher’s duel, with Marleigh Monroe ‘24 and the Suffield hurler throwing shutout ball over five innings. For the game, Monroe allowed just 3 hits and struck out 11 Suffield batters. However, in the sixth inning two uncharacteristic errors by Westy fielders led to Tiger runs. Westminster sought to battle back in the top of the 7th inning, as Melody El-Amin ‘27 singled. Two strikeouts followed. Anna Hassett ‘27 then took first base on a HBP, and the game ended with a ground ball to second base. Despite the loss, the Martlets showed much potential for the spring season. Other than the sixth inning hiccups, the fielding was crisp. Olivia Gordon ‘24 had a role in four putouts, and Paige Herlihy ‘25 made an important play to stifle a Suffield rally in the third inning. Catherine Graves ‘24 had a nice catch on a long fly to centerfield in the sixth. In their first game working together as pitcher and catcher, Monroe and El-Amin were very effective for Westminster. The Martlets will next travel to play at Kent on Saturday,
