Westminster Overcomes a Strong Salisbury Team

The second biggest win of the day was the rain holding off, despite a five minute pause in action. The biggest win came on the actual court as the boys snagged their first win of the 2024 spring campaign! We knew it would be tough with a solid, strong looking Salisbury team, and most doubles got off to great starts. Co-captains Will Whiting ‘24 and David Suit ‘24 built a strong lead early and never looked back, winning their pro set 8-2. At #3 Liam Hibbard ‘27 and Finn Hocking ‘26 took on some big hitting players, and despite some spirited deuce games lost it 8-4. Logan Sun ‘24 and Hugh Olson ‘25 withstood a great comeback from their #2 opponents, but closed it out 9-7 to secure the doubles point. Onto singles up 1-0 overall. Suit played his best match of the season so far, winning without dropping a single game. Up 2-0. Whiting was able to save a set point in the first set breaker, and clutched up winning 8-6 to secure the first set, and rolled in the second. Up 3-0 overall. Salisbury fought back hard winning some tough, solid tennis at #6 and #4. Credit to Alexei Kocatas ‘25 and Alex Chen ‘24 for holding out as long as they could against steady opponents. Up 3-2 overall. With Sun fighting a leg injury after winning the first set, who better to finish things off than the rookie! Hibbard pulls one out at #5 6-3, 6-0 with some great baseline play and serving, giving the boys the clinch. A bonus would have been a Sun comeback in the deciding superbreaker, but it wasn’t meant to be and a good Salisbury performance deserved the win at #3. The squad will rest up over the next few days and be ready to host Pomfret on Saturday.
